Dr Unni Karunakara, former International President (2010-2013) of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) embarked on a cycle journey across India to raise awareness about MSF’s medical humanitarian work. Dr Unni set a goal to ride from Kashmir to Kerala and raise USD $100,000 to support MSF’s programs in 70 countries around the world, including eight projects in India.
Along, the way, Dr Unni stopped to speak to medical students, faculty and staff at 10 medical colleges, conducted 10 Q&As at film screenings hosted by Alliance Française, participated in two panel discussions MSF India Presents: “Why Medicines Shouldn’t be a Luxury” in Mumbai and at a panel Q&A hosted by the Indian Medical Association on “Access to Affordable and Effective Medicines”. In Delhi and Mumbai, cycle enthusiasts and groups joined Dr Unni in symbolic 20km rides in the city.
Joining Dr Unni on his 5,600 km historic journey were co-riders who flew in from Canada, France, Holland, Czech Republic, the US or from Delhi to show solidarity with Dr Unni in his ride to support MSF’s work. They include, Olympian Helen Upperton, Entrepreneur Sanjiv Suri, Economist Dr. Jyotsna Puri, Sarpanch (mayor) Chhavi Rajawat, Filmmaker Dylan Mohan Gray, to list a few. Together, they reached the fundraising target of USD $100,000.

MSF is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare in around 70 countries. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in 1996 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.
The entire journey of Dr. Unni Karunakaran was filmed by Pyxis Picures and we made 25 short documentaries on various segments of the journey.
A film crew was with Dr. Unni from Kashmir to Kanyakumari filming more than 12 hours in a day. The film crew consisted of the following.
